Challenge
Northport needed to improve surveillance coverage across a large and changing port environment. An earlier wired CCTV concept carried high projected cost, while stakeholders questioned whether wireless connectivity could be reliable enough in a seaport.
Principal Consultant Contribution
Established a cross-departmental committee so security and operational requirements were defined by the people who would use the capability, not only by IT.
Led benchmarking visits including Penang Port and incorporated relevant lessons into Northport’s requirements and solution evaluation.
Organised practical POCs in the port environment to test wireless performance and resolve stakeholder concerns through evidence. The resulting wireless architecture was faster to install and easier to expand, relocate and re-plan than the earlier wired concept.
Leveraged the stable TETRA environment alongside real-time CCTV visual information so HSE and wharf operations personnel could coordinate more effectively.
Approach
- Created cross-functional governance for requirements.
- Benchmarked comparable port implementations.
- Validated wireless performance through on-site POCs.
- Challenged high-cost infrastructure assumptions with evidence.
- Designed for rapid expansion and relocation.
- Connected communications and visual information for operational use.
Outcome
Introduced a more flexible and economical surveillance approach while strengthening situational awareness and collaboration across security, HSE and operational teams.
Business Value
- Reduced infrastructure cost versus the earlier wired concept.
- Shortened deployment and reconfiguration time.
- Reduced technology-selection risk through real-world validation.
- Improved operational coordination using radio and live visual information.
