Challenge
Northport’s conventional and cargo systems depended on ageing Informix 4GL and database technology. A proprietary replacement had encountered serious stability, recovery and high-availability problems, leaving the organisation unable to proceed confidently with the wider migration.
Principal Consultant Contribution
Directed a comparative evaluation of PostgreSQL and MySQL using representative Informix data, migration scenarios, performance testing, compatibility, future support and resilience requirements.
Selected PostgreSQL after extensive validation of HA, backup, failover, point-in-time recovery and large-query stress scenarios. Introduced Pentaho ETL to accelerate migration and wrote shell-based routines to translate Informix-specific SQL and 4GL syntax.
Progressively migrated Conventional Cargo, Cargo, Depot, Port Police and maritime EDI systems, including approximately 15 years of operational and EDI data. The approach was later extended to a MUMPS-based container environment using staged text-file migration into dedicated PostgreSQL schemas.
Built internal PostgreSQL and migration skills so continuity could be maintained without dependence on external migration vendors.
Approach
- Compared open-source database alternatives using production-relevant data.
- Validated HA, failover, backup, PITR and stress behaviour before cutover.
- Used ETL and scripted syntax conversion to accelerate repeatable migration.
- Ran staged cutovers from Conventional Cargo through EDI and container operations.
- Involved operational stakeholders in testing and acceptance.
- Built internal capability for ongoing support and future migrations.
Outcome
What began as a stalled database replacement became a wider port legacy-modernisation platform, progressively removing critical workloads from ageing proprietary databases while preserving operational continuity.
Business Value
- Reduced licensing and proprietary-platform exposure.
- Established resilient recovery and failover capability.
- Migrated approximately 15 years of operational and maritime data.
- Avoided vendor-heavy migration costs and created reusable internal capability.
